College Educational Accommodations
College Educational Accommodations
Individuals who have had Individualized Education Plans or 504 plans during their elementary school and high school years are likely to continue to need interventions in the collegiate setting. In other cases, individuals have been able to perform well without formal supports in high school but the changes in structure and academic rigor of college can lead them to struggle in ways that have not experienced in the past. While IEPs and 504 plans are not provided in college, all collegiate institutions provide accommodations to those who qualify for them. In college modifications to curriculum and assignments are not often provided but accommodations such as note taking assistance, extra time for testing, and small group settings for testing are options to offer support to learners in need. To determine what documentation is required to receive accommodations, individuals should speak to their college’s disability office. To receive academic accommodations in college an updated psychological evaluation is often needed. These evaluations often consist of an assessment of cognitive functioning and academic achievement and other measures based on requirements from the specific college that are needed to determine if a disability is present and what accommodations an individual may require.
