General Description of the Training Program
The Psychology Practicum Training Program at Jennifer E. Manfre & Associates (JEM) was developed for well-qualified pre-licensed trainees in psychology. During the year-long training program, the psychology practicum student remains dedicated to adhering to professional standards outlined in the training agreement, the corresponding APA ethical standards, and JEM policy.
JEM offers Psychology Practicum students with a choice to apply to a therapy only or advanced practicum track. This overall generalist training experience, with focus on advanced experience in clinical therapy practice and/or psychological assessment. Other training opportunities include developing competence in case conceptualization, professional development, cultural diversity, professional and ethical standards, and integrating principles consistent with best-practices in clinical work.
Expected Outcomes, Philosophy, and Training Model
The overall goal of the training program is to strengthen applied skillset as advanced mental health practitioners as well as supporting practicum students in the identification of and dedication to their professional development goals. Through a broad range of training opportunities, trainees can expect to grow sophisticated clinical skill sets and profession-wide competencies. In addition, trainees are encouraged to develop deeper self-reflective capacity, refinement of burgeoning professional identity, increased confidence, ability to network and engage in the community, and engagement in internally driven learning.
JEM follows a Developmental Scholar-Practitioner model to foster a holistic training experience that both enhances the growth of the trainee as well as the clients they work with. Consistent with the outcome goals of the training program, this model provides framework to assist mental health trainees in expanding their understanding of mental health through “multiple ways of knowing,” integrating external and internal methods of learning, focus on core competencies of respective fields of mental health, examining the multiple roles of the self as a mental health practitioner, and connecting to the community at large with specific focus on culture and diversity (Peterson et al., 2015).
Training Outcomes and Objectives
The JEM training program aims to achieve proficiency in training goals consistent with the APA’s profession wide competences. Additionally, trainees are expected to exhibit values consistent with JEM’s mission. These include utilizing a strengths-based approach, developing a holistic view of a client, and pursuing clinical excellence. By the end of the training year, trainees are expected to demonstrate “intermediate competence” in each of the training goals and objectives.
Program Structure and Components
Individualized Training Components will be assigned to each trainee based on designated training track, previous experience, and expressed clinical preferences.
Therapy Only Track: Practicum students are expected to maintain a caseload of therapy clients and provide individual, couples, and/or family. Facilitation of group therapy is also available. JEM considers expressed clinical preferences of every therapist when assigning referrals including clinical interests, areas of competence, previous training and experience, and desired areas of growth.
Advanced Track: Practicum students in the advanced track are expected to maintain their therapy caseload as well as complete the course of the assessment process within a timely manner. Successful residents within this track have demonstrated strong diagnostic skills, writing skills, and ability to integrate clinical proficiency throughout the assessment report. JEM considers the expressed clinical preferences of every therapist when assigning referrals including clinical interests, areas of competence, previous training and experience, and desired areas of growth. Practicum students in this track will demonstrate clinical competence with standard battery assessment measures (Weschler IQ, WIAT/WJ, MMPI, etc). Previous experience delivering cognitive and neuropsychological assessments is preferred.
