Disability Evaluations

Understanding the process of a Disability Evaluation for Individuals with Special Needs.

A guide for legal guardians and caregivers

Assisting individuals with intellectual disabilities, developmental disabilities, physical disabilities and/or social-emotional disabilities who are applying for benefits and support.

At Manfre & Associates, our expert clinicians have the experience, capability, and compassion to help ensure your loved one’s future.

It's a straightforward process with valuable outcomes

One of our licensed clinical psychologists conducts an objective, qualitative assessment of all domains of functioning, including: cognitive abilities, executive functioning, learning and memory, activities of daily living, and social emotional functioning.

We understand the importance of providing for your loved one. The information obtained in a disability evaluation is used to assist with current and future planning needs.

The process includes:

  • Structured clinical interview
  • Medical and records review
  • Psychological testing
  • Mental status examination
  • Functional assessment
  • Interviews with caregivers, teachers, or coworkers
  • Confirming diagnosis
  • Applying for disability benefits
  • Guiding treatment plans
  • Identifying necessary academic work and social setting accommodations
  • Determining long term planning

Findings and Recommendations

Once we’ve gathered all the data, a written report is prepared to explain our findings and to provide you with recommendations for next steps. Those involved in the disability determination process also use this report to understand the nature of additional supports that will be needed for your loved one in the future.

How to use this evaluation:

Commonly, caregivers and legal guardians use our reports to apply for specific benefits such as:

  • PUNS
  • SSI
  • SSDI
  • Support for job coaching
  • Support for residential living

Count on us to help

You may be looking for a formal diagnosis for your loved one with special needs, or embarking on the Transition planning process and exploring educational, vocational, or community programming. You may be seeking financial planning options, or working with a legal team to determine guardianship and other future needs planning.

Often, a psychological evaluation is required to provide evidence of the impact of your loved one’s disability on their capacity to support themselves in daily living. No two evaluations are identical – each must reflect a unique story and set of circumstances. We understand how to incorporate this important story into the clinical data and statutory verbiage needed to support you on this journey
